A Wake-Up Call for True Independence

I am sitting at home writing this opinion piece because I was directly affected by Trump’s abrupt decision to halt and cease aid to Africa. Like me, many others across Africa and the U.S. felt the impact, none of us saw it coming. But as the saying goes, everything happens for a reason. So, let’s assume this too had a purpose.

For decades, Africa has been dependent on foreign aid, often with hidden strings attached. While these funds support critical sectors like healthcare, education, poverty and infrastructure, it has also fostered economic dependency and, in some cases, perpetuated corruption and mismanagement. Over billions in foreign aid has been injected into Africa, yet sustainable economic growth remains elusive. The irony?

Programs like the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), credited with saving over 26 million lives, have been critically affected. The freeze on aid has not only jeopardized ongoing treatments but also threatens to reverse decades of progress in combating HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa.

Some argue that aid is a form of reparation for the atrocities of slavery and colonialism, but how long was that supposed to last? The bigger question is: Why is Africa still so poor with high unemployment rate? Why are we lagging behind in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

The answer lies in leadership failures, systemic corruption, and a deeply ingrained dependency mindset. Too often, African leaders prioritize personal gain over national development. This cycle has made wealth accumulation through corruption the norm, rather than investing in self-reliance and innovation.

We cannot keep preaching African independence while relying on foreign aid to survive. Instead, this crisis should push us to redefine our economic strategies and build sustainable local solutions. Ghana’s former government once championed the idea of “Ghana Beyond Aid”, a vision that should have extend to the entire continent, but what happened to it? Question for the gods. Now is the time for Africa to break free from foreign control and chart its own path toward true economic and political sovereignty.
