We all have been in that situation where we want to work but can’t find the inspiration to work, or we are just in our space having things to do but do not know where to start. Being lazy is a habit that can take root very easily because it aligns with our comfort. Honestly, there are just those days in every individual’s life when they just feel demotivated to do anything. It is normal, it becomes a virus when it is nurtured to the point that it interferes with the productivity level of your work.

Below are some practical steps to help you overcome laziness and improve productivity.

Set Goals

Setting goals can keep you in check on what you need to accomplish in a year, in a week, day, or hour. When you set goals you are compelled to work towards them, get them done and be free from their torment. These goals could be yearly goals (thing things you wish to get done in a year), monthly goals, weekly goals, and even daily goals. These are very effective ways to get things done in time and improve productivity. When setting these goals, make them clear enough, specifically define them and follow the SMART rule of setting goals and objectives.

Plan Your Day

It is wonderful to be able to work without being constrained by a timetable, but organizing your day can help you be more productive. Most people don't think this is really significant. Making a daily plan helps you stay organized and makes work go more smoothly. You can schedule your day by creating a list of the chores you need to complete; prioritize the highest-priority items first if your work has tight deadlines, then go on to the tasks that won't take much time to complete, and finally the remaining items. Make sure you don't overfill the list when creating your daily to-do list so you have time to relax.  Some tools you can use include toggle, Trello, and even the Pomodoro technique, etc.

Keep Active

First things first: Your mind and body are interconnected, therefore if you tell your brain that your body isn't prepared to function today, it will continue to stay inactive in any way.  Once you wake up, it's crucial to make an effort to be active. As much as we all stumble and occasionally want to retire back to bed, make it a habit to be active in the morning by performing easy exercises like skipping, squats, and even dancing. Your day can be made or destroyed depending on how your body responds in the morning. This is very realistic and we may all have different ways we feel in the morning, therefore, find any way that keeps you active in the morning just so that you can remain active enough to rid laziness from your system.

Get Enough Sleep

You may have noticed that I discuss sleep and how vital it is to our health in the majority of blog entries. Yes! Sleep has a way of replacing damaged tissues, keeping you regenerated and energetic. Therefore, do not undervalue the value of sleep.  Get at least 6, 7, or 8 hours of sleep if you don't like to take naps.

Get Rid Of Distractions

The phone will be the most common means of distractions, I'm sure. We've all done it: scrolled endlessly through our social media feeds on sites like Instagram, Tiktok, and even Pinterest. Whatever you use to cause devastation, dig it out, toss it away, and focus on your work.  If it's social media, you can continue using it after finishing what you're doing on your phone when it's silent or in DND (do not disturb mode). Try as much as possible to move far from your distractors when it is time to work.

Reward Yourself

Celebrate your modest victories. Since most people have trouble appreciating their small victories, big victories could also feel insignificant to them. When there is a reward waiting for you at the conclusion of each activity, you are motivated to complete it and get the reward. Whatever the prize, give it to yourself as a reward. I also do this frequently, and it typically involves unwinding and not working on a certain day while watching a favorite series at the end of the week. At the end of the day, you feel gratified and are renewed and prepared to resume work, this is my favourite tip because it is one thing that keeps me productive.

Final Thoughts

Overcoming the habit of laziness can be difficult especially if has taken root in your system. It will require consistency and discipline to effectively see results, but once you get used to it, the end product is very pleasing.
